Ethiopia names final 23-man squad for Afcon 2013

Addis Ababa, January 2 (WIC) – Ethiopian football team coach Sewunet Bishaw has named his final 23-man squad who will be travelling to South Africa for the 29th edition of the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

Last week Sewunet left out five players from his provisional 31-man squad ahead of Sunday’s friendly against Niger in Addis Ababa which ended with a marginal 1-0 win for Ethiopia.  The players left out last week included Fitsum G/Mariam, Fitsum Teferi, Mulualem Mesfin, Medhane Tadesse, Aklilu Ayenew, Dereje Alemu, TSC Euskrichen’s Dawit Beshah.

Today, the coach has left out three more players to name a final 23-man squad ahead of his team’s friendly against Tunisia in Qatar on Monday, January 7, 2013. Goalkeeper Dereje Alemu (Sebeta), US based striker Adulahi Aman and Aklilu Ayenew (Dedebit) have become the latest players left out of Sewunet’s squad.

The 23-man squad includes Ethiopia’s foreign based players including Fuad Ibrahim, who plays in attacking position for Minnesota Stars (USA) and wing man Yussuf Saleh of Syrianska (Sweden).

The prolific goal scorer Salhadin Seid, who plays for Wadi Degla of Egypt and Adane Girma of St. George, who was instrumental in Ethiopia’s qualification to Afcon 2013 after 31 years of absence are also named in the squad. The pair will provide first choice attacking option for Sewunet, who has also included Oumed Ukuri (St George) and Getaneh Kebede (Dedebit), scorer of the only goal in the friendly against Niger.

The Waliyas of Ethiopia are drawn in Group C with Zambia, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. The Waliyas’ opening game will be against defending champions Zambia on January 21 at Mbombela stadium, Nelspruit.
