Ethiopia keen to strengthen cooperation with UNECA

Addis Ababa, September 15, 2012 (WIC) - President Girma Woldegiorgis said Ethiopia will further strengthen existing cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

While discussing with the newly appointed UNECA Executive Secretary, Carlos Lopes of Guinea-Bissau here Friday, the President said that Ethiopia will provide the necessary support to UNECA in its efforts to bring about rapid development in Africa.

President Girma said the Ethiopian people and government will contribute share in the efforts of UNECA to speed up economic and social development in the continent.

The Executive Secretary on his part told journalists that he exchanged views with the President on issues related to cooperation between Ethiopia and the UNECA.

Lopes said UNECA carried out various activities in collaboration with the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank and other institutions in its efforts to speed up economic and social development in Africa.
He said it will further strengthen ongoing efforts towards development of the continent in collaboration with regional and international institutions.

According to ENA, Lopes succeeds Abdoulie Janneh. He has more than 24 years of experience at the United Nations as United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative in Brazil and Zimbabwe.
