Some 52,000 blood units distributed among beneficiaries
Addis Ababa, August 8 (WIC) – Some 52,000 units of blood collected from donors were distributed among beneficiaries this budget year, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
National Blood Bank Director with MoH, Dr. Girum Tesfaye, told WIC the blood units fell short of the 79,000 blood units projected for the reported period.
Following the expansion of health facilities and coverage in the country, the demand for blood is also increasing from time to time, he said.
In order to meet the ever increasing demand, the Ministry of Health has built a blood bank in capital city of each regional state, Dr. Girum indicated.
He added activities are underway to build more than one bank in wide regional states. “This effort of the ministry would raise the number of blood banks to 26 from the existing 12 banks,” he said.
Dr. Girum finally called on the public to nurture the culture of donating blood to save the life of more people.
