Enterprise to upgrade Kombolcha Airport to asphalt Concrete
Addis Ababa, July 4 ( WIC)-The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise said preparation is underway to upgrade Kombolcha Airport to asphalt concrete level at a cost of 150 million Birr.
Enterprise Engineering, design and Construction team leader Azeze Betru told ENA that the first phase construction of the airport launched in 2003 EC at gravel level is nearing completion.
The construction of fence, controlling tower and other facilities has already completed.
The upgrading of the airport is necessary as is located in the country's second largest industrial zone, he said and adding it would help transport industrial and agricultural products to central and foreign markets swiftly.
It will enable the airport to provide service for huge passenger and cargo aircrafts, he said.
The Airport is among the four airports planned to be built during the Growth and Transformation Plan period (GTP).
The Enterprise has planned to increase the number of airports to 21 from the existing 17 during the GTP period. Renovating and upgrading of existing airports is part of the plan.
The government made decision to upgrade the airport to asphalt level taking into consideration expansion of industry in Kombolcha area. Currently, the Enterprise is administrating 17 airports. Of which Addis Ababa Bole, DireDawa, Mekele Alula Aba Nega and Bahir Dar Ginbot 20 Airports are serving international flights.
