UN officials briefed on human rights in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, June 29 ( WIC) - Various government officials on Thursday briefed UN higher officials on Ethiopia’s endeavor to ensure and promote human rights.

Organized by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in Addis Ababa, officials of various government offices explained the implementation of international human rights agreements that the country has endorsed to ensure equity of social and economic services.

Representatives from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) also took part in the discussion and reiterated that it carries out its activities without government interference.

Higher Commissioner for the UN Human Rights, Abdulhamid Algemry on the occasion said the discussion has raised his awareness of the human rights situation in Ethiopia which would help to strengthen future supports.

Minister of Justice, Berhan Hailu, on his part, said the wrong perception of human rights issues of Ethiopia, as well as technical and financial capacity problems are challenges for human rights. He said the discussion has a contribution to address these challenges. (ERTA)
