State undertakes integrated basin dev’t on 560,000 hct land
Addis Ababa, December 30 (WIC) –The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s State Agriculture Bureau said it has carried out integrated basin development works on 560,000 hectares of land.
Bureau Government Communications Affairs Process Owner, Berhanu Tofa, told WIC the development works were carried out in 90 highly degraded woredas of the state.
Berhanu indicated that terracing, fencing and construction of flood diversion channels were among the activities undertaken in the woredas.
Environmental conservation training was given to 11,000 development agents and 143,000 farmers to alleviate problems that encountered whiling executing the development works.
He said valuable lessons were drawn from Tigray, a region which registered a tangible result in basin development works, and incorporated in the SNNP State’s basin development work plan.
The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s State Agriculture Bureau is currently undertaking integrated soil and water conservation as well as crop and livestock development activities.
