Addis Ababa, April 11 (WIC) – The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) said the national safe drinking water coverage has reached some 61.6 per cent.
Based on the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) inventory, the clean water coverage in urban and rural areas has reached 80.72 per cent and 58.71 per cent, respectively, External and Public Relations Director with MoWE, Bizuneh Tolcha, told WIC.
According to Bizuneh, the data from the inventory shows the possibility to attain the target set to raise the national water coverage to 70 per cent by 2015.
With a view to better monitoring the performance of the water and sanitation sector in Ethiopia, an international WASH services symposium is underway in Addis Ababa since last Monday and is expected to be concluded today.
The symposium, jointly organized by MoWE and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre would help to share experience on how to provide a national baseline of water and sanitation facilities using standard methods.
