Editorial

31 December 2009 (No.27)

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the sanction imposed on Eritrea by the UN Security Council is a real indication of the beginning of the international community to take strict measures on the regime bent on destabilizing the East African region and that is an appropriate response to the destabilization policy of the Eritrean government, adding that if implemented effectively and wholly would limit its destructive mission.

So many years passed since the Eritrean state began destabilizing the region. The state in Eritrea invaded the Hanish islands of Yemen in 1995, right after its independence. The state in Eritrea continued its aggression instead of working for the betterment of the life of the Eritrean people. Although the people of Eritrea have been suffering of shortage of food, luck of good governance and internal stability and working atmosphere, the state in Asmara paid little attention to all these economic and social problems and rather scheming on destabilizing the Horn of Africa.

The people of Eritrea were compelled to join the military and universities were closed. They had remained only with one option to leave their country for good. As a result, thousands of people migrated to Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan and other countries. It’s been meddling and interfering in the internal affairs of neighboring  countries.  The state in Eritrea began to fully sponsor the Sudanese rebels and the Somali extremists.

Despite all the failures it faced, the state in Eritrea has no courage to learn from its grave mistakes. It has rather carried out webs of aggressions from one side to another. Then, it invaded some parts of Ethiopian, the Bademe and its environs, in which it faced lose of thousands of human life and destruction of materials. Its aggression continued and invaded part of Djibouti and continued sponsoring the Somali terrorist groups who have been escalating the insecurity and instability of Somalia. Although too late, the United Nations’ took an appropriate major on Eritrea that could minimize if not altogether block its aggressive activities in the Horn of Africa. The sanction is one step and its implementation is the most important one to limit the destabilizing effects of the state in Eritrea. This needs commitment from  all member countries to work hand in hand and sincerely.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Eritrea is destabilizing the Horn of Africa. It has been fully sponsoring the terrorist groups in the region. Despite its negative roles in the Horn, the international community failed to take a tangible measure up on that country. Political analysts argue that little attention is given to the Horn of Africa both by the international community and developed countries. What do you say?
