The Youth has ‘irreplaceable’ role in the country’s politics! PDF Print E-mail

Editorial

28 November 2009 (No.24)

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said that the Youth has irreplaceable role in making the upcoming election democratic, peaceful, free, fair and credible.  The youth accounts more than 30 percent of the total number of population.  It is also the active and creative force who is responsible in working day in day out to guarantee the sustainability of the economic development and the eradication of poverty.

The youth is the major segment of the society that has shouldered the lion’s share in this regard. Therefore, there should be capability of shouldering their responsibility in realizing the country’s vision that emphasized being one of the middle income generating countries in the coming fifteen to twenty years.

In the same token the youth is also responsible to strengthen the democracy in the country.  They need to develop tolerance and respect to one another and above all respect to the constitution of the country. In the past regimes, the youth were suffering to a large extent and faced the negative consequences in the country. They were deprived of their rights to organize, move and express their opinion.

Since the introduction of multiparty system, the youth has become one of the beneficiaries of the peace, democracy and development in the country. The youth could be benefited more if the peace, democracy and good governance have strengthened further. Having appreciated what has been achieved so far, there is need for more consolidated action in enhancing the democratization process in the country.

Therefore, the youth, in collaboration with peace loving citizens and politicians, should work harder to make the upcoming election peaceful, free, fair and credible. In this regard it is obvious that the youth has a greater contribution that no segment of the society could replace it.

The youth has already known the ins and outs of the ruling party as well as other opposition political parties.  No matter which party any member of the Youth Association supports, s/he should realize that instigating chaos and mess in the country is not a healthy and positive thinking that the youth should struggle against such antidemocratic activities.  Besides, they should know the electoral code of conduct document by heart and work hand in glove for its effective implementation.  Prime Minister Meles Zenawi also said that the code of conduct on the election, which is expected to be endorsed by the House of the Peoples’ Representatives, has details on the do’s and don’ts and the Youth should be in a position to expose those who violate this electoral code of conduct apart from shouldering its irreplaceable role in the country’s politics.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Eritrea is destabilizing the Horn of Africa. It has been fully sponsoring the terrorist groups in the region. Despite its negative roles in the Horn, the international community failed to take a tangible measure up on that country. Political analysts argue that little attention is given to the Horn of Africa both by the international community and developed countries. What do you say?
