Ministry, Companies ink large scale pumice, limestone, gypsum mining accord PDF Print E-mail

Addis Ababa, November 26, 2009 - The Ministry of Mines and Energy and Derba Midroc Cement and Dashen Cement Factory PLCs here on Wednesday signed an agreement that would enable the latter to mine pumice, limestone and gypsum in large scale. 

 

Mines and Energy Minister, Alemayehu Tegenu and General Manager of the companies, Haile Assegide signed the agreement.

 

According to the agreement, the mining period will be ten years.

 

The agreement would enable the companies to produce 2.9 million tons of pumice in Meki town and its surrounding in Oromia State.  

 

The companies would also produce 13.91 million tons of limestone and gypsum in Dejen Woreda of the Amhara State.

 

The company allotted 59.1 million Birr for the same purpose.

 

The mining activity is expected to create job opportunities to 223 people.

 

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the agreement is expected to enable Ethiopia earn additional foreign currency thereby speeding up ongoing construction works in the country.

 

Alemayehu urged the companies to execute mining activity in an environmentally friendly manner. Speaking on his part, the general manager said various efforts are being made to launch the mining activity within a short time. (ENA)
