Addis Ababa, November 19 (WIC) – The former President of Ghana and WFP global Ambassador against Hunger, John Kufuor, commended the efforts being made by the Ethiopian government to manage environmental resources.
After visiting the Managing Environment Resources to Enable Transition (MERET) project at Nazareth area, Kufuor told journalists here yesterday that the efforts being made to ensure food security through rehabilitating depleted lands are encouraging and impressive. He said the government is executing encouraging activities in close collaboration with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) so as to improve food security of farmers through developing degraded lands. Kufuor pointed out that depleted lands are converted in to highly productive lands and a green environment through MERET joint project of the Ethiopian government and WFP. “I will carry this valuable lesson to else where of the development activities aimed at reducing poverty performed by the Ethiopian government and WFP,” he added The MERET programme is making supportive effort to farmers through altering desert areas into most forests through plantation rich in hydrogen, conserving soil erosion and tackling climate change, he said. Regarding the development activities being done by the Ethiopian government, Kufuor said the Ethiopian government has done great works so far and is doing well to bring a visible economic change. “I have known Ethiopia since 1969 and there is a fundamental change that we can see through this window," he said. Kufuor finally said that the integrated approaches I have seen here between the government of Ethiopia and WFP are remarkable. |
