Addis Ababa, November 10, 2009 -  The First Regular Meeting of the Addis Ababa City Council concluded on Tuesday after approving the appointments of the new speaker, deputy speaker, and secretary for the council and three cabinet members of the city administration.

Accordingly, the council unanimously appointed Dr. Atsede Assefa as Speaker, Mekbib Gebremariam as Deputy Speaker, and Atkilti Beyene as Secretary of the city council.

The council also approved the appointments of Shissema Gebresilassie as head of the trade and industry bureau, Bizunesh Meseret as head of the women and children affairs bureau, Tadesse Benti as head of the (would-be) social and civil affairs bureau of the Addis Ababa city administration.

The newly-appointed heads of the stated bureaus of city administration swore in same day to filly discharge their duties and responsibilities bestowed by the government, and the public at large.

Mayor of the City, Kuma Demekssa said series of relevant performance evaluations carried out earlier have shown that the former speaker, deputy speaker, and secretary of the city council were incompetent in discharging their duties and responsibilities.

Hence, he said, the ruling party nominated the newly-appointed speaker, deputy speaker, and secretary of the city administration based on their merits and commitments witnessed so far in serving the government and the public.

Kuma said the city administration will do its level best toward enabling the speaker, deputy speaker, and secretary of the council fully discharge their duties and responsibilities in the years ahead.

Ex-speaker, Sinknesh Atale said on her part replacing the speaker, deputy speaker, and secretary of the council with new ones is indeed acceptable and timely decision since the former had a number of limitations in playing their respective leadership and decision making roles. (ENA)
