Meles: Consent of parties on election code of conduct makes full-fledged democratic election PDF Print E-mail

Addis Ababa, October 30, 2009 (Addis Ababa) - Chairperson of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) Meles Zenawi said the agreement signed by four political parties is binding for contesting parties to make the upcoming election fair and democratic.

 

The Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) , All Ethiopian Unity Organization (AEUO), the Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) and the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (CUDP) signed the code of conduct on election and its implementation strategy document here on Friday .

 

Speaking at the signing ceremony Meles said the document would abide opposition parties to contest peacefully and legally and enable the ruling party to facilitate fair competition.

 

Meles said besides endorsing the code of conduct the parties have designed implementation strategy.

 

He said the agreement is a new chapter for the country and it is an achievement gained through give and take principle among political parties.

 

He expressed beliefs that the agreement is a result of mutual understanding among political parties. He said that he hopes that other parties will follow suit.  

 

Meles said EPRDF is committed to realize the agreement and effort will be exerted to instill the code of conduct and implementation strategy among members and supporters.

 

AEUO Chairperson, Eng.Hailu Shaul on the occasion said the series consultation among parties enabled the parties to negotiate in common understanding.  

 

Eng. Hailu said parties should allow the public to make history.

 

EDP Chairperson, Lidetu Ayalew on his part said the negotiation was successful as the parties reached agreement in a spirit of mutual understanding.  

 

CUDP president Ayele Chamisso also said the document is a guarantee for the upcoming general election to be free, fair and democratic.

 

Ayele urged the public to exercise the right to vote and fight against anti-democratic forces .
