Thursday, 18 June 2009
Dire Dawa, June 18 (WIC) - Researchers at the Haromaya University  said the award World Food Prize-2009 prize given to Ethiopian scientist Dr. Gebisa Ejeta would contribute in scaling up the research works Ethiopian scientists are conducting to ensure food security in Ethiopia.

Researchers gathered at an event organized to congratulate Dr. Gebisa, who was former student of the Haromaya University, over his success in winning the 2009 World Food Prize, said the award would encourage Ethiopian scientists engaged in conducting researches in the sector.

Some of the researchers commented on the occasion that the award has inspired researchers at the university to exert more efforts and release successful research outputs.

The researchers also mentioned that the sorghum varieties discovered by Dr. Gebisa are currently being multiplied and expanded in various woredas of the Harari state.

Dr. Gebisa was chosen for the World Food Prize-2009 for his monumental contributions in the production of sorghum, one of the world’s five principal cereal grains, which have dramatically enhanced the food supply of hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa.
