CARE Ethiopia to honor model women, men PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 May 2009
Addis Ababa, May 20 (WIC) – As part of promoting and facilitating its work, the External and Public Relations Unit of CARE Ethiopia has initiated to recognize and honor successful women and men in Chiro woreda of the Oromia State and Awash town.

The award would help inspire role model women and men who are able to demonstrate significant progress in their lives and have greater influence in their own communities by participating in CARE’s programs.

Some 15 women and five men in Chiro woreda and Awash town would be awarded over 10,000 birr and certificates at an occasion to be held on May 26 and 27.

CARE Ethiopia Country Director, Abby Maxman told WIC that the award launched in 2007 is aimed at further enabling role model women and men to have grater influence in their own community in the empowerment of women and showcase the impact of CARE’s activities.

She said the awardees were selected for their role in improving livelihoods and promoting self reliance, bringing about tangible change in their lives, families and community as well as decision making role at the household and community level.

Attitudinal change towards the importance of education, health, HIV/AIDS prevention and control and leadership role in fighting HTPs as well as development in general is also another criterion for selecting the awardees, she said.

CARE Ethiopia is working on women empowerment as a means to address the underlying causes of poverty and social injustice, it was learnt.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Eritrea is destabilizing the Horn of Africa. It has been fully sponsoring the terrorist groups in the region. Despite its negative roles in the Horn, the international community failed to take a tangible measure up on that country. Political analysts argue that little attention is given to the Horn of Africa both by the international community and developed countries. What do you say?
