OAU/AU golden jubilee celebrations officially launched
Addis Ababa, May 21, 2013 (WIC) - Following the morning session of the PRC, the African Union Commission held a press briefing to local and foreign journalists.
The press briefing was given by Dr. Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the AUC, Erastus Mwencha, Deputy Chairperson of the AUC and Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA and current Chairperson of the PRC, Mrs Habiba Mejri Cheikh, Director for Information and Communication of AUC.
Opening the session, Erastus Mwencha, announced the opening of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the OAU/AU. He said “Today's session of the PRC kicks of the yearlong celebration of the golden jubilee."
He went on to add that “the celebrations will be conducted in people-centered approach to take stock of the reflection of people of the continent and in a manner that embraces the youth, the women and the children of Africa.
According to him, throughout the year various discussions on different thematic issues will be held as part of the celebrations. The outcome of the discussions will be used to develop Africa’s Agenda 2063, which will serve as the blueprint of the continent’s future. Ambassador Konjit briefed the journalists on the agenda of the two- day meeting of the PRC.
In response to a question, weather what OAU/AU has achieved or failed in the past fifty years, Ambassador konjit, said “ to say OAU has failed is inappropriate as it has achieved its primary goal of liberating Africa “ and noted that since the formation of the AU in particular , Africa is grappling with issues of underdevelopment. She added that, as the struggle with underdevelopment is a work in progress, labeling the continental body as a failed organization is also incorrect. Dr. Dlamini Zuma in her response about the significance of the event noted the importance of the celebration in energizing and motivating the people of the continent towards continental unity.
