Addis Ababa, May 16 (WIC) – Ethiopian Sugar Corporation (ESC) said it is encouraged by improved productivity and reduced cost of production after implementing Kaizen management philosophy in three factories.

ESC director general Minister Abay Tsehaye made the remark during an award ceremony held on May 8, 2013 at Wonji Sugar Factory to honor employees who excelled in the implementation of the Japanese management philosophy.

In a statement sent to WIC, the corporation said it has managed to reduce cost of production by 10 million birr from operations in three sugar factories – Wonji (take up 71 percent), Metehara and Fincha.

“I’m proud of your achievement, obtained in just a short period, without requiring any additional budget or machinery but by only implementing new methods and innovations,” Abay said on the occasion.

Mengisteab Gebreekidan, Deputy Director General of ESC’s Kaizen and IT Department, attributed the success to creating an understanding among workers that sustained and improved productivity can be achieved by employing innovative and cost efficient methodologies.
