Corporation to develop nat'l railway standard document
Addis Ababa, April 3 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) announced that it is making preparations to develop a new national railways standard document.
A workshop on the preparation of Ethiopian Railways Standard was held here yesterday.
Corporation Infrastructure Division Deputy Executive Officer Debo Tunka said taking important lessons from international experiences and adapting it with domestic conditions, the Corporation would prepare its own railways standard. “The workshop would create opportunity to have vital inputs that could enable it prepare a standard that fit with the infrastructure on the ground, the climate and topography of the country,” he said.
Debo said the Corporation is on the verge of completing negotiations with Brazil and Russia to kick off new railways construction projects in addition to those already underway, side by side with the task of preparing the national standard. “Every country has its own standard, and we need to have a new and our own standard for railway development,” he added.
Transport State Minister Getachew Mengiste on his part said alongside the construction, it has become vital and is the right time to develop the necessary technical standard and specification for railway norms of design, construction, maintenance, operations and safety as well as for facilities to be used in the rail industry.
The setting of the national standard for railways would pave the way for safe and stable railway transport infrastructure thereby contributing to the economic development and promotion of public welfare, the State Minister said.
Ethiopian, Chinese and Russian scholars presented research papers . The expatriates shared the experiences of their respective countries to workshop participants.
The Ethiopian Railways Corporation is entrusted with the responsibility of realizing 5,000kms railway network.
A document made available on the occasion indicated that the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit and the Ethio- Djibouti Railway projects are well underway and are expected to be completed according to schedule.
