The Council of EPRDF elects Chairman and Deputy Chairman
Addis Ababa, September 16, 2012 (WIC) - The Council of Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front, EPRDF, concluded its two day regular session on Saturday electing Hailemariam Desalegn and Demeke Mekonnen Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the front respectively.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hailemariam Desalegn was Deputy Chairperson of the Part while the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was a Chairperson.
Ato Demeke Mekonnen is the Chairperson of the Amhara National Democratic Movement as well as the Minister of Ministry of Education.
Hailemariam and Demeke also assume the position of Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia respectively to be endorsed by the Parliament later.
The Council deliberated on two documents entitled “We shall realize Meles’/EPRDF’s vision through ensuring the practical supremacy of Developmental Democracy” and “Building Leadership and the Renaissance journey.”
In connection with the passing of the late Prime Minister, the Council lauded the respect and recognition given by the peoples of Ethiopia, African compatriots, international leaders and institutions to the positive changes registered in Ethiopia. The statement said the Council also understands the high responsibility entrusted to it by those parties.
The Council has reached an agreement to further ensure the sustainability of the ongoing developmental and democratic journey of Ethiopian renaissance through the participation of all members of the party, supporters of the struggle as well as the owner and beneficiary of the change - all the peoples of Ethiopia, the statement stated.
It reviewed the so far implementation of the nation’s five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) and also deliberated on its focus for the year 2005 E.C. The Council also discussed ways of curbing inflation.
The Council of EPRDF has 180 members equally represented by the four member parties.
