Professor Tekalign receives 2014 Yara Prize

Addis Ababa, 4 September 2014 (WIC) - Professor Tekalign Mamo Assefa officially received the Yara Prize of 2014 here Tuesday in the presence of senior government officials, distinguished guests and participants of the 4th Africa Green Revolution Forum.

During the award ceremony, former CEO of Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) Eleni Gabre-Madhin (PhD) gave a brief introduction about this year's Yara Prize laureate Professor Tekalign and his remarkable achievements towards rising the productivity of soil and persevering natural resources.

Upon receiving the award, Professor Tekalign said 'I am so humbled and honored to be rewarded such prestigious award. I thank those who have supported me to be successful in my endeavors!”

Professor Tekalign was awarded the prize of Yara for being the champion of sustainable agricultural development through leveraging his scientific knowledge, developing targeted interventions for management of waterlogged soils, rehabilitating acidic soils and degraded landscapes, among others, for over the past three decades.

It is to be recalled the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Dr. Eleni Gabre-Medhin were Yara Prize winners of 2009 and 2012 respectively.

According to EH, Yara launched its prize to recognize outstanding contributions in Africa Agriculture in 2005 in Oslo, Norway.
