Ethiopians in Canada contribute 1.5 mln USD for Grand Dam

Addis Ababa, 3 September 2014 (WIC) - Ethiopian Diaspora in Canada has contributed over 1.5 million USD for the construction of the multi-billion dam Ethiopia has been building over River Nile over the past two years and a half, the Council for the Coordination of Public Participation on the Construction of the Grand Dam in Canada said.

Chairperson of the Council Zemenu Genet told ENA that the Diaspora in Edmonton, Quebec, Ontario and Toronto contributed the stated sum.   

It estimated that over 40,000 Ethiopian Diasporas are living in Canada.

The Council will continue to mobilize the Ethiopian Diaspora living there until the completion of the dam, he affirmed.   

The money the Diaspora used to purchase bonds will enable them to invest in the country in the future, the Chairperson said.   

The Council is working hard to raise funds through various programs including music concerts alongside selling bonds, he added.   

He urged that government should organize a visit to the construction site in a bid to enable the Diaspora see real situation there.
