Corporation produces energy meter

Addis Ababa, 22 August 2014 (WIC) - Hi-Tech Engineering Industry under the Metal and Engineering Corporation (METEC) produced new import substituting smart energy meter and began supplying to the Ethiopian Electric Utility yesterday.

METEC Deputy General Manager Brigade General Tena Kundi told journalists that the new it-plus smart energy meter is better compared to the old models. He said the new meter was designed considering future technology development scenarios and easily managed by a remote control from central station.

According to him, the new energy meter facilitates fair electric power distribution and meets customers need.

He noted that the Corporation and its subordinate institutions have full ownership over the design and production of energy meter which is made compatible with national grid.

Brigade General Tena said that the industry would have the capacity to produce 1,200 meter daily when goes fully operational. Accordingly, the country would minimize foreign currency expense in importing energy meters.

Hi-Tech Industry General Manager Major Berihun Gidey for his part said that the meter has a capacity to countdown the consumed energy accurately and help avoid irregular manipulations.

Ethiopian Electric Utility Executive Officer Bitweded Gebrealif also said that the smart energy meter enables to save electric power and avoid total blackout when the new meter is fully installed.

As to him, the new meter will duly solve errors happening during reading. He noted that the demand for this type of energy meter is close to 2 million, which is equivalent to the meter currently in use.
