Addis Ababa, 22 July 2014 (WIC) - Ethiopians and Ethiopian-born foreign citizens living in the Russia Federation and Belarus raised funds for the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) last week.

At an event organized by the Ethiopian Embassy in Moscow a total of US$18,000 was raised and another US$5,000 pledged.

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Ambassador Kassahun Dendir, urged Ethiopians and Ethiopian-born foreign citizens to intensify their support to this flagship project of the Dam.

Participants at the event vowed to continue to support the struggle against poverty being waged in Ethiopia.

The Ambassador said the event, attended by a number of Russian officials and others, would have a positive role in strengthening people-to-people relations between Russia and Ethiopia.
