Kuraz project undertakes sugarcane cultivation on over 5,000 hct land

Addis Ababa, 11 July 2014 (WIC) - Omo Kuraz sugar development project said it has carried out sugarcane cultivation on 5,100 hectares of land.

Omo Kuraz is a huge project which comprises five sugar factories. It will have a total area of 175,000 hectares of land for its sugarcane cultivation.

“Out of the total area, sugarcane cultivation was carried out on 5,100 hectares of land,” representative of the project’s farming department deputy manager, Abebe Asefa told WIC.

According to Abebe, the plantation activities have created job opportunities for a total of 6,400 people.

In a related development, each household residing around the project was given a hectare of land so that they can grow sugarcane and supply it to the factory, he indicated.

The households are being given technical support to enable each household use a quarter of his land for sugarcane cultivation and the remaining land for crop development.

A total of 1,600 hectares of land were given to the pastoral community villagized around Omo Kuraz sugar development project, Ababa indicated.
