Dr. Tedros meets with ILO’s Assistant Director-General

Addis Ababa, 9 July 2014 (WIC) - Dr. Tedros Adhanom met on July 8 with Aeneas C. Chuma, Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Welcoming Aeneas C. Chuma, Dr Tedros noted that creating job opportunities is an important element of Ethiopia’s strategy to fight against poverty.

He said through crafting appropriate policies and strategies, the Government of Ethiopia envisages the youth to expedite Ethiopia’s Renaissance through entrepreneurship and creativity.

He also explained that the government of Ethiopia attaches special importance to increasing agricultural production, promotion of initiatives on green investments, inclusive development, and development of human capital through education in a bid to reduce unemployment.

He also indicated that Ethiopia is committed to go beyond subsistence farming in supporting smallholding farmers to enhance agricultural production through small-scale irrigation, provision of high yielding varieties of seed and fertilizers, crop diversification, and soil conservation measures.

He added that Ethiopia had been supportive of micro and small scale enterprises to diversify job opportunities and reduce poverty in urban areas while also noting that small scale enterprises became foundational bedrock of medium and large scale industry.

With reference to migration, he detailed, the Government’s efforts in creating awareness on the adverse consequences of illegal migration as well as tackling its structural causes.

Aeneas C. Chuma on his part pledged that ILO would enhance its engagement and collaboration with Ethiopia by giving priority to youth, employment and migration.

Speaking about Ethiopia’s growth trajectory, he lauded Ethiopia’s double-digit economic growth.

He emphasized that ILO is willing to promote entrepreneurship, broaden access to affordable capital and provide social financing to youth.
