Ambassador Berhane met Head of the EU Delegation to Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, 14 June 2014 (WIC) - The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos held discussions with Head of the EU Delegation to Ethiopia, Ambassador Chantal Hebberecht, deputy head of delegation Barbara Plinkert, and German Ambassador to Ethiopia, Lieselore Cyrus.

The discussions mainly focused on Nile issues and the use of transboundary resources.

Ambassador Berhane noted that Ethiopia appreciated the support from EU commission and member state countries in handling Nile issues alongside Ethiopia and Egypt.

He reiterated once again that the sole purpose of the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam (GRD) project is to generate electric power, affirming that the GERD design respects international standards and poses no significant harm to downstream counties.

He further added that recently positive and encouraging signs have been observed from Egyptian side and hoped that it will in turn lead to the coming of Egyptians to the dialogue table.

Ambassador Hebberecht, on her part said that the EU Commission is very much committed to encourage the different parties into a constructive dialogue and to reach a win-win and sustainable solution.

She further added that the EU will continue to support and to encourage comprehensive dialogue regarding Nile issue. (MoFA)
