Ambassador Berhane: “Ethiopia empowering women and youth”

Addis Ababa, 2 July 2014 (WIC) - State Minister Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos met and held discussions with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Dr Julitta Onabanjo, on Thursday (May 29).

Ambassador Berhane welcomed the newly appointed regional director and noted that Ethiopia greatly valued its relations with UNFPA and the UN system in general. 
He further praised UNFPA works in Ethiopia and the fact that its operations are in perfect harmony with the country’s Growth and Transformation Plan.

Ambassador Berhane said that “UN agencies are instrumental in bringing out the best experiences in the continent” and added that Ethiopia was working towards eradicating harmful traditions affecting women including early child marriage.

He said the government strongly supported the campaign to end child marriage launched by UNFPA.
The State Minister also noted that government attached great importance to empowering women and youth in the Growth Transformation Plan (GTP) and said this area would remain a priority in the second phase of the Plan after 2015.

Dr Julitta Onabanjo who commended Ethiopia’s recent achievements in reducing child mortality rate and the country’s efforts in improving its health sector, said that UNFPA would continue to support the Ethiopian government’s development efforts.
