Third quality awards to honor 12 organizations with excellence

Addis Ababa, 22 May 2014 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Quality Awards (EQA) is all set to honor 12 organizations with excellence award during the third quality awards ceremony scheduled to take place on Saturday May 24, 2014.
The ceremony will take place at the Sheraton Addis and will be attended by senior government officials and prominent personalities, Tesfaye Digie EQA general manager announced.

Some 52 companies, governmental and non-governmental institutions took part in the competition out of which 21 are from the manufacturing sector, 16 from the services sector, eight non-for-profit service providers and seven from the construction sector.

The general manager said 12 organizations will be honored with the prestigious excellence award and will receive trophies. Six organizations will receive the High Merit award and 10 others will be honored with the Merit award, Tesfaye adding that participation and appreciation certificates will be given to 12 organizations. All award applicants will also receive, what is regarded as the most beneficial aspect of the competition, a feedback summary of their strengths and rooms for improvement.

“The main objective of the competition is to instill the concept of quality in products and services companies and organizations deliver and encourage healthy competition,” Tesfaye said.
EQA has prepared self assessment manuals for each of the sectors and an excellence model. The selection is made by a 22 member jury after reviewing an assessment report of the 16 member technical committee of reputable personalities drawn from government ministries, higher educational institutions, NGOs, private and public organizations. The technical committee members’ assessment includes a field visit to the organizations.

“The government attaches great importance to ensure quality and competitiveness which is why phase two of the growth and transformation plan period will give due attention to these concepts,” Almaz Kahsai, chairperson of the jury and director general of Ethiopian Standards Agency (ESA), said.

She said the agency she leads is preparing a directive governing quality awards organizations such as EQA and the promotion of imparting quality.
Sultan Mohammed, chairperson of the technical committee and director general of the Ethiopian Mapping Agency, organizations like EQA should also vigorously work in consultations services and provide trainings to promote quality in companies and institutions.     

The first national quality award held in 2009 saw Documents Authentication & Registration Office, MIDROC Gold Mine Plc and Harar Brewery SC became the first recipients of the Excellence Award.
The number of Excellence Award recipients grew to six during the second national quality awards held in April 2012. They included Biruh Tesfa Irrigation and Water Technology, Bishoftu Hospital, Dashen Brewery, Harar Brewery, Kality Metal Factory and Kombolcha Textile SC.

The Ethiopian Quality Award Organization was founded in January 2008 by Walta Information Center and Addis Ababa University.
