Third Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa held in Bahir Dar town

Addis Ababa, 28 April 2014 (WIC) - The third Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa was held in Bahir Dar town, Amhara Regional State under the theme: “Illicit Financial Flows and their impact on Peace and Security in Africa”.   

Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, on the occasion highlighted the need for strong and transparent systems nationally and globally to curb illicit financial flows.   

This was also echoed by former Nigerian President and Chairperson of the Forum, Olusegun Obsanjo. “These systems must be grounded in democracy and the principles of good governance,” he said.    

He said illicit financial flows were making the challenges of peace, security and stability more complex - by some, conservative, estimates Africa loses 60 billion USD annually.   

Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the UN ECA, Dr Carlos Lopes and AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui have attended the two-day meeting.
