Addis Ababa, 21 March 2014 (WIC) – Office of the National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation on the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam (GRD) said the construction of the dam is going as per schedule.

Office Deputy Director General, Zadig Abrha, told WIC recently that the construction of the dam, which started in April 2011 and expected to be completed by 2017, is well in progress.

According to Zadig, some 27 billion birr was spent so far on the dam. He said the public contributed 26.1 per cent of the fund spent on the 80 billion birr dam.

Ethiopians at home and abroad have pledged to buy bonds amounting 11.5 billion birr. Out of this pledged amount, 7.1 billion birr has already been collected and channeled towards the construction of the dam, he said.

Zadig, who appreciated the participation of Ethiopians so far also called upon them to strengthen their support until the realization of the dam.

The dam is being funded by the government and the people of Ethiopia and will serve not only Ethiopia, but also Sudan and Egypt, he said.

According to Zadig, Egypt’s campaign against the dam has no impact on the construction of the dam.

Egypt's best choice should be to peacefully work with Ethiopia and other Nile riparian countries for a common benefit,     he said.
