Addis Ababa, 15 March 2014 (WIC) – Oromia Regional State Council for the Coordination of Public Participation in the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Office has raised over 908 million birr for the dam project in the past three years.
Aman Ali, General Director of the office, told WIC that the sum includes contributions made both in donations (over 24.8 mln br) and bond purchase (close to 884 mln br).
The contribution is made by civil servants, investors, farmers and pastoralists. City dwellers, small and medium enterprises and non-governmental organizations have also contributed in bond purchases.
Aman said first round bond purchases have been finalized in some 322 zones and 306 towns. More towns and weredas are expected to participate in the second and third rounds.
According to the General Director, the council planned to collect over 1.4 billion birr over the past three years. However, the amount collected during the period is 62 percent what the regional office set out to collect.
The office is confident to collect more pledges in the remainder period and narrow down the gap between the projection and the amount collected.
