Addis Ababa, 30 January 2014 (WIC) - Despite the progress made over the last decade in the implementation of programmes under the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), participating countries should have clarity of objectives and focus in order to ensure greater success, according to Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn.

“Due to its principled leadership, NEPAD has transformed the global debate about Africa,” Hailemariam, who is also current chair of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), told the 29th Summit of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) held on Wednesday in Addis Ababa.

“The journey of the last decade has been particularly rewarding for Africa,” he said, appealing to the continent’s leaders to make good on their commitment to enhance the mobilization of resources for the NEPAD Agency, the AU technical body that facilitates and coordinates development projects continent-wide.

Meanwhile, the HSGOC chair, President Macky Sall of Senegal, has said the Committee spared no effort in promoting NEPAD and its goals as Africa embarked on the huge task of structural transformation of its economy.
“One of the principal activities of NEPAD is resource mobilization for our programmes, and we have to carry out this task by placing priority on domestic resources,” President Sall told the Committee.

According to ERTA, before the committee began a closed-door discussion on NEPAD reports, including assessment of the impact of Africa’s relationship with its traditional development partners, President Sall proposed a summit to be held early June 2014 on funding for projects and programmes undertaken through the agency of NEPAD across the continent.

He mentioned the Islamic Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African regional economic communities among would-be participants at the summit.
