Addis Ababa, 3 July 2014  (WIC) – A Somali lawmaker was killed and another injured in a drive-by shooting on Thursday in the capital Mogadishu, eyewitnesses said, AA reported.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the two MPs as they left a hotel in central Mogadishu, according to the witnesses.

Somali municipal official Abdel-Qadir Bashir confirmed that MP Mohamed Mohamud Hayd had been killed in the attack.

A government soldier accompanying the two lawmakers was also killed in the attack, security sources said.

There was no claim of responsibility for Thursday's attack.

In April, the Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group had claimed responsibility for the assassination of two lawmakers.

Somalia, a long-troubled Horn of Africa country, has been in the grip of political violence since the outbreak of civil war in 1991. (AA)
