EQA awards 12 organizations in quality excellence
Addis Ababa, 26 May 2014 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Quality Awards Organization (EQA) honored 12 organizations with Excellence Award during the third quality awards ceremony.
The 12 organization received a trophy from the hands of President Dr. Mulatu Teshome at a gallant ceremony, which was also attended by Redwan Hussien, head of Government Communications Affaris Office, at the Sheraton Addis on Saturday May 24, 2014.
First placed Excellence Award winners included two brewery giants – Dashen Brewery and Harar Brewery. The later also received a special recognition for winning the Excellence Award for the third time in a row.
Second placed Excellence Award winners are Ayder Referal Hospital, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, International Clinical Laboratories, Mekelle University Health Science College, Teklebirhan Ambaye Construction and Electro Commercial SC.
Bruh Tesfa Irrigation, Harmony Hotel, Bahir Dar University and Metahara Sugar Factory are named third placed Excellence Award winners. Six organizations received the High Merit award, 10 others were honored with the Merit award and appreciation certificates were handed to 12 organizations.
After handing out the trophies, President Mulatu congratulated the Excellence Award winners and all organizations that participated.
“Our national vision of development can only be achieved when our manufacturers, service providers and construction companies incorporate quality into their activities,” Mulatu said.
Some 52 companies, governmental and non-governmental institutions took part in the competition out of which 21 are from the manufacturing sector, 16 from the services sector, eight non-for-profit service providers and seven from the construction sector.
All award applicants also receive, what is regarded as the most beneficial aspect of the competition, a feedback summary of their strengths and rooms for improvement.
“The main objective of the competition is to instill the concept of quality in products and services companies and organizations deliver and encourage healthy competition,” Tesfaye said.
EQA has prepared an excellence model and self assessment manuals for each of the sectors. The selection is made by a 22 member jury after reviewing an assessment report of the 16 member technical committee of reputable personalities drawn from government ministries, higher educational institutions, NGOs, private and public organizations. The technical committee members’ assessment includes a field visit to the organizations.
The first national quality award held in 2009 saw Documents Authentication & Registration Office, MIDROC Gold Mine Plc and Harar Brewery SC became the first recipients of the Excellence Award.
The number of Excellence Award recipients grew to six during the second national quality awards held in April 2012. They included Biruh Tesfa Irrigation and Water Technology, Bishoftu Hospital, Dashen Brewery, Harar Brewery, Kality Metal Factory and Kombolcha Textile SC.
The Ethiopian Quality Award Organization was founded in January 2008 by Walta Information Center and Addis Ababa University.
