Addis Ababa, 6 March 2014 (WIC) – A plane carrying the body of the late Alemayehu Atomsa, former chairman of the Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Organization (OPDO) and president of the Oromia regional, arrived in Addis Ababa late last night.
Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, President Mulatu Teshome and other senior government officials and grieving family members and relatives were present at Bole International Airport.
Alemayehu died from his recurring illness while receiving treatment in a Bangkok hospital, Thailand at around 1 PM on Thursday, March 6, 2014. He was 45 and is survived by his wife and two daughters and a son.
The funeral of the late Alemayehu, greatly admired for his unwavering stand on corrupt and rent-seeking practices, will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014. A memorial service is expected to be held at Addis Ababa Stadium before his body is laid to rest at Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Born in Bilo Boshe wereda of eastern Wollega zone of Oromia Regional State, Alemayehu was elected chairman of OPDO in June 2010 and became president of Oromia region in September that year.
Although plagued by illness shortly after his appointment, Alemayehu continued to serve in both public posts until his resignation on February 17, 2014.
Following his resignation, the party elected Muktar Kadir, Civil Service Minister and good governance reform cluster coordinator with the rank of deputy prime minister, to be the next chairman of the OPDO.
