Addis Ababa, 26 February 2014 (WIC) - National Coalition for Women against HIV/AIDS re-elected Azeb Mesfin as board chairperson and Aster Mamo as deputy.
During a general assembly held yesterday at Elilly International Hotel, the coalition of women also elected board members (seven) and three audit commissioners who would be serving the coalition for the next four years.
Since its establishment twelve years ago, the national coalition has been engaged in various activities to protect women from the HIV/AIDS pandemic as well as in combating harmful traditional practices.
While presenting the four year performance report of the coalition, Azeb hailed the positive gains in protecting women from HIV/AIDS and harmful traditional practices.
The coalition has been engaged in massive social mobilization activities to ensure maternal health, Azeb said. The assistance given to pregnant women to have access to health institutions has proved successful in preventing mother-to-child transmission of the HIV virus, Azeb added.
Azeb said the coalition has also made a big contribution in providing assistance to women economic empowerment efforts.
Cognizant of the challenges ahead, the board chairperson vowed to strengthen efforts to realize a nation free from HIV/AIDS.
