PM visits Meles Zenawi Referal Hospital in Jijiga
Addis Ababa,9 December 2013 (WIC) – Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn paid a visit to the Meles Zenawi Memorial Referral Hospital in Jijiga.
The hospital, named in honor of the former prime minister, is in the final stages of construction with project owners currently installing medical equipments and recruiting staff for the first referral hospital in the region.
Hailemariam was in Somali regional state to attend the Eighth Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day celebrations. After the conclusion of the colorful celebration, Prime Minister Hailemariam visited the referral hospital to witness the progress.
The referral hospital has consumed 250 million birr and when it goes operational it is expected to provide service to over five million people living in the region as well as neighboring cities and countries such as Somalia and Djibouti.
Abdulfetah Mohammed, vice president of the region and head of the regional health bureau, said thanks to the government’s effort to provide access to health, the region now boasts nine hospitals, 167 health centers and 95 health posts.
Adjacent to providing health services with its 450 hospital beds, Meles Zenawi Memorial Referral Hospital, whose construction began in 2008, will accommodate a separate wing for research and medical education.
