Majority of bakeries in metropolis fail to meet standard, says QSAE

Addis Ababa, May 7, 2008 (WIC) - The majority of bakeries in the Addis Ababa city do not meet the standard for quality and size issued by the government, according to Quality and Standard Authority of Ethiopia (QSAE).

Authority Director General, Mesay Girma, made the remark at a half-day discussion held here today with proprietors and workers of bakeries in the metropolis.

According to a sample survey carried out in 41 bakeries in six sub-cities in the city, the bread supplied to market by most of the bakeries fails to meet the standard for quality and size, he elaborated.

The survey revealed that many bakeries in the metropolis are reportedly supplying bread below 50 grams against the standard, the Director General indicated.

Accordingly, bread sold for 20 cents weighing between 26.7 to 49 gram is being supplied to consumers violating the standard, it was pointed out.

The Director General finally underscored that the authority would be forced to take measures up to revoking the licenses of the bakeries who fail to fulfill the requirement in collaboration with the city Trade and Industry Bureau.
