Indian company donates 1 mln birr for expansion of elementary school in SNNP State

Addis Ababa, May 7, 2008 (WIC) - An Indian company, M/s Overseas Infrastructure Alliance Ltd., has reportedly donated one million birr to an elementary school in Gurage Zone of SNNP State.

According to a statement the Embassy of India sent to WIC today, the donation would be utilized for the construction of a separate dormitory for the Mihur School and orphanage.

Indian Ambassador Gurjit Singh handed over the donation on behalf of the company to His Holiness Abune Melketsedic, Archbishop of Ethiopian Orthodox Church, in Charge of Gurage Kembata, Hadiya and South Zone.

Speaking on the handing over ceremony, Ambassador Singh said that Ethiopia and India are working to together to create universal access to education to all school-age children and the donation would help towards the realization of this objective.

"This was also a fitting contribution to mark the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Ethiopia," the ambassador added.

Lauding the gracious gesture demonstrated by the company, His Holiness Abune Melketsedic said "the donation will benefit the school and orphanage to have a decent roof over their head."
