Axum, March 27 (WIC) - More than 11,600 farmers have been irrigating 4,457 hectares of land in Central Tigray Zone this budget year, according to the zonal farmers association.
Association Representative Berhane Gebrekidan told WIC that the farmers in nine woredas of the zone are irrigating their farms to sustainably ensure their food security.
The farmers are cultivating onion, pepper, tomato, potato, salad, chickpea and maize by utilizing over 2,000 water harvesting ponds, more than 600 water pumps and over 2,600 water drip technology, the representative said.
They are also developing marketable items like garlic and onions as well as various kinds of spices, he stated. According to him, the association is exerting efforts to engage many other farmers who did not participate in the irrigation development.
Over 9,000 farmers in the zone have benefited by developing over 5,000 hectares of land last fiscal year, it was learnt.
