Oromo Martyrs Monument built with close to 64mln birr inaugurated

Adama, March 26, 2008 (WIC) -  President Girma Woldegiorgis underscored that the newly inaugurated Oromo Martyrs Monument should not only be a memorial to those who scarified their lives to get rid of oppressors but also a center where we renew our pledge to actively engage in development.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Oromo Martyrs Monument yesterday, the president said everyone should intensify the struggle against poverty so as to realize the objective of the martyrs who died for same and just cause.

President Girma said the present generation should work more than ever to extricate the country from poverty and build a middle income country.

Chief Administrator of Oromia State Abadula Gemeda, on his part said the martyrs sacrificed themselves in order to ensure the national rights of the Oromo people, adding that the public should therefore consolidate their unity and make poverty history.

Of the close to 64 million birr spent for the construction of the monument, the national defense forces covered 23.4 million birr while the balance was covered by the business tycoon Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi, it was learnt.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Addisu Legesse, federal and states officials as well as diplomats were in attendance of the inaugural ceremony.
