Assosa, March 26, 2008 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Credit and Savings Institute said it would disburse 10 billion birr loan to 3.6 million people in the coming three years.
Ethiopian Credit and Savings Institutions Association Director Dr. Wolday Amaha told WIC that the increase in the amount of loan would contribute towards strengthening the role of the public in reducing poverty by organizing themselves and creating jobs.
There is also a plan to save three billion birr from the loan beneficiaries so as to help them utilize the money for development by cultivating saving culture, he said, adding that due attention would also be given to expand and develop the capacity of the existing 28 branch offices.
The support being given by the government to develop the institutions has been successful and activities that help integrate the institutions with the agriculture, poverty reduction and good governance activities and polices of the government is being consolidated, according to Dr. Wolday.
Currently, credit and savings institutions in the country are providing over 2.5 billion birr for about half a million customers, it was learnt.
