First Lady Azeb Mesfin commends effort of NGOs, religious institutions in fight against HIV/AIDS

Bahirdar, March 26, 2008 (WIC) - The support of NGOs, religious institutions and associations, alongside the efforts of the government, has been tremendously boosting the capacity to prevent and control HIV/AIDS, according to the chairperson of the National Coalition for Women against HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at the third Amhara State HIV/AIDS Women Movement Panel Discussion held in Bahirdar town yesterday, Coalition chairperson First Lady Azeb Mesfin said the government has been executing various activities by designing health packages that alleviate the damages caused by HIV/AIDS.

The devastating damage caused by HIV/AIDS on the youth has been declining through the involvement of the public, she said, adding that the effort exerted to prevent mother to child transmission of the virus has however failed to produce the desired result.

The government has been exerting efforts to establish VCT centers and expand the services across the country, according to the chairperson.

The First Lady urged NGOs, religious institutions and associations to further consolidate their efforts alongside the efforts of the government.

Chief Administrator of Amhara State, Ayalew Gobeze, on his part said the government has been exerting efforts to boost the social, economic and political participation of women as they have a fundamental role in the growth of the country.

Federal and state officials as well as over 1,000 women drawn from the state, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples Representatives, Shitaye Minale, took part in the day-long panel discussion organized by Amhara State Women's Association in collaboration with the state Coalition for Women against HIV/AIDS.
