Eritrea among worst violators of human, religious rights: U.S State Department

Addis Ababa, March 25 (WIC) - United States has designated Eritrea among the worst violators of human and religious rights, according to Mission Network News.

On its annual report on human rights, the US State Department said once again that Eritrea is among the top 10 violators of human and religious rights, it said.

A flood of arrests over the last few years motivated the U.S State Department to designate the country a "Country of Particular Concern," a designation reserved for countries with the worst of human rights offenses.

There are over 2,000 Christians imprisoned in inhumane conditions in the country, according to the source which noted that all have been denied legal counsel or trial.

Despite this open persecution, the government continues to support its statement issued in May 2003 that ''no groups or persons are persecuted in Eritrea for their beliefs or religion,'' it pointed out.
