Addis Ababa, March 25 (WIC) – The first ever trading centers in the country would go operational in six towns soon, according to the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange Authority (ECEA).
ECEA Director General, Ambassador Addisalem Balema, told WIC that the trading centers are being furnished with various quality and standards measurement equipment.
He said the centers would be opened in Addis Ababa, Adama, Shashemene, Nekempte, Bure Gojjam and Humera towns.
The authority has been issuing license to individuals and traders that engage in the activity believed to replace the traditional marketing system by modern one, the director general stated.
The market system would benefit producers and consumers by reducing the disparity between demand and supply, he said, adding that it would also prevent illegal merchants from increasing prices at whim.
A national conference that involves government bodies , associations, farmers, traders and other members of the community would be held within a fortnight before the launching of the trading centers, he disclosed.
According to the director general, the measures being taken by the government to control inflation in towns are appropriate and important in stabilizing the market. The action taken to stop the black market in foreign currency would particular play pivotal role in reducing the amount of money in circulation, he elaborated.
The policy that enforces the increase in the deposit of commercial banks and the lifting of taxes on food commodities are also important measures introduced to stabilize the market, according to the director general.
