Meteorological Agency to open 357 new stations in coming five years

Addis Ababa, March 24, 2008 (WIC) - The National Meteorological Agency said it has been establishing meteorological stations across the nation with a view to supporting the ongoing multi-sectoral development activities of the country.

Speaking at the World Meteorology Day and the 110th founding anniversary of Addis Ababa Meteorology Center yesterday, Agency Director General Kidane Assefa said the agency is more than ever working to assist development endeavors with modern stations equipped with latest weather forecast equipment.

He said the agency has so far established 903 various meteorological stations that enable to gather and analyze information.

The agency has also made preparations to open 357 new stations in the coming five years, according to the director general.

The stations would be equipped with diverse modern appliances so that they could provide timely and useful information, he added.

Addis Ababa Caretaker Administration General Manger Dr. Wubshet Berhanu on his part said meteorological services have immense contribution to the agricultural development led industrialization of the country.

He urged the agency to further support the development activities of the country.

World Meteorology Day was celebrated for the 27th time in Ethiopia, it was learnt.
