Dejena Endowment fully rehabilitates 16,000 hectares of depleted land in Tigray State

Mekelle, March 17, 2008 (WIC) - Some 16,000 hectares of depleted land has been fully rehabilitated in Tigray State, according to Dejena Endowment.

Alaje Forestry Development and Utilization Institute Manager with Dejena Endowment, Gebremedhin Hadera, told WIC today that the depleted mountainous areas in southern, eastern and central zones of Tigray State have been rehabilitated during the past ten years.

The rehabilitation work in Ambalaje, Korem, Maychew, Hagereselam, Saesi tsaedaemba, Ganta Afeshum and Golomekeda woredas has not only revived the natural resource but stopped soil erosion in the areas,the manager said.

According to him, half a million cubic meter of wood has been collected from the forests to be supplied to factories.

The institute has created 64 permanent and 500 casual jobs in addition to creating conducive situations to apiary development, he said.
