Government electronics, print media allot airtime for political parties

Addis Ababa, March 4 (WIC) – Government electronics and print media have reportedly allotted airtime for political parties running in the upcoming elections.

Radio Sector Deputy General Manager with Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency, Solomon Tesfaye, told WIC that the radio sector has finalized the allotment of airtime for political parties to conduct election campaign for the upcoming local and by-election.

Accordingly, one hour airtime in Amharic and 30 minutes in Oromiffa languages was allocated from Monday through Friday, and 30 minutes in Tigrigna on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Besides, 30 minutes airtime was scheduled for the political parties in the FM service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, according to Solomon.

Election Desk Chairman with Ethiopian Television, Teshale Bekele, on his part said 20 minutes airtime in Amharic language on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 10 minutes airtime in Oromiffa and Tigrigna languages were given to the political parties.

Editor in Chief of the Amharic daily Addis Zemen with the Ethiopian Press Agency, Wondimkun Alayou, on his part said the paper has reserved 138 columns for six consecutive weeks and the Oromiffa newspaper Berisa 216 columns in six editions.

Information and Communications Coordinator with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority Wubayehu Worku said the airtime was allotted on the basis of the number of candidates the parties have fielded and the seat they have in federal councils.
