Diredawa, January 22, 2008 (WIC) - More than 777.3 million birr has been earned in hard currency from agricultural produces exported via eastern Ethiopia during the past six months, Diredawa Export Office with the Ministry of Trade and Industry disclosed.
Office Representative Mekonnen Abate told WIC today that the income was secured from coffee, vegetables and fruits, Khat, cereals, oil seeds, live animals and animal produces and others exported to various countries. The produces were exported to Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Japan, Sweden, France, England, Holland, Italy and Australia, he pointed out.
The income earned during the stated period exceeded that of same period last year by over 187,455,000 birr, according to Mekonnen. The representative attributed the growth to the increasing number of exporters, the solving of problems related to export process and the recent awarding of exporters engaged in the sector as well as the decline of smuggled produces. The office envisages earning over 1.6 billion birr by the end of the budget year as the number of exporters has steadily been increasing, he indicated. |
