Close to 700 Eritreans flee to Central Tigray Zone

Axum, January 21, 2008 (WIC) - Some 699 Eritreans have fled to Ethiopia through Merebleh and Ahferom woredas during the past six months, the Central Tigray Zone Administration said.

Zonal Security and Justice Head Abadi Woldesenbet told WIC that the number of Eritreans entering Ethiopia has increased significantly following the recent repression and killings in the country.

As a result, 246 members of the army ranking from private to Major,323 students and 129 civil servants and members of the other cross sections of the society have escaped through Merebleh and Ahferom woredas during the last six months alone, the head said.

Some refugees who wanted to remain anonymous for the safety of their families said the government has more than ever intensified its repressive rule and the outcome has been mass exodus to neighboring countries.
